You’ve spent hours perfecting your design. You’ve chosen between Hard and Soft Enamel, and you’ve even picked out the perfect metal plating. But when it comes time to request a quote, you hit a wall:
"What size should my pin be?"
It is the most common question we get at HappyPins. When you are looking at a giant digital illustration on your monitor, it is incredibly hard to visualize how that artwork will translate into a physical piece of metal in the palm of your hand.
Choosing the wrong size is the #1 reason pin designs fail. Go too big, and the pin becomes too heavy to wear (and costs a fortune in mold fees). Go too small, and your beautiful details will turn into an unrecognizable metal blob.
Let’s demystify pin sizing once and for all.
I. The Real-World Visual Guide (The Coin Test)
Most custom enamel pins fall somewhere between 0.75 inches and 2.50 inches. To help you visualize this without a ruler, the easiest method is to look at standard coins and objects.
-
0.75" (19mm): Roughly the size of a US Penny. Very small, subtle, and dainty.
-
1.00" (25mm): Roughly the size of a US Quarter. The industry standard for basic logos.
-
1.25" (31mm): Roughly the size of a US Half Dollar. The "sweet spot" for most designs.
-
1.50" (38mm): A standard Poker Chip. The go-to size for detailed illustrations.
-
1.75" (44mm): Roughly the size of a US Silver Dollar. The starting point for oversized collectible pins and coins.
-
2.00"+ (50mm+): A large Statement Piece. Heavy, prominent, and meant for complex artwork or extreme 3D medals.

II. The Golden Rule: Complex Details Need Bigger Pins
Here is the most important secret of pin manufacturing: Metal lines need physical space.
Every time colors change in your design, there must be a raised metal line separating those colors (otherwise, the liquid enamel paint will mix together). In the factory, these metal borders must be at least 0.2mm thick to survive the stamping process, and the colored areas need to be at least 0.3mm wide to hold paint.
What does this mean for your size? If you have a highly detailed character with complex eyes, hair strands, and jewelry, you cannot shrink it down to 1 inch. If you do, the factory will have to simplify the design, stripping away your hard work, or the metal lines will crash into each other and create a messy blob.
-
Simple Logos / Bold Text: Can easily be shrunk down to 0.75" or 1.00".
-
Characters / Intricate Art: Needs to be at least 1.50" or larger to breathe.
💡 HappyPins Pro Tip: > Print your design out on a piece of paper at exactly 1 inch or 1.5 inches. If you can't clearly see the details with your own eyes on the paper, the factory won't be able to stamp them into metal! (If you MUST have tiny details on a small pin, check out our Printed Pins option, which removes the need for metal borders!)

III. Choosing Size Based on Your Use Case
Still not sure? Let the purpose of the pin dictate the size. Here is what we recommend based on the most popular categories at HappyPins:
1. Corporate Logo & NPO Pins (0.75" - 1.00")
If you are ordering Corporate Logo Pins for employees to wear on suit lapels, or awareness ribbons for NPO Pins (Non-Profit Organizations), you want them to be subtle and professional. A massive 2-inch logo on a tailored suit looks overwhelming. Stick to the size of a Quarter or smaller.

2. School, Souvenir & Artist Series Pins (1.25" - 1.50")
This is the ultimate sweet spot. Whether you are designing School Pins for student backpacks, creating localized Souvenir Pins for a gift shop, or launching highly detailed illustrations for your Artist Series, a 1.25" to 1.5" pin is large enough to show off beautiful artwork, but light enough to wear without sagging.

3. Sports & Trading Pins (1.75" - 2.00")
Youth baseball and soccer Sports & Trading pins are all about showing off and trading power. These pins are rarely worn on clothing; they are collected on heavy lanyards. Because they feature bold team rosters and often include moving elements like spinners or sliders, bigger is always better!

4. Military & Awards Pins (1.75" - 2.50")
If you are designing heavy Military Pins (like double-sided challenge coins) or premium 3D Awards Pins to commemorate years of service, you want it to feel heavy and substantial in the hand. The standard size for a premium medal or coin is usually 1.75 or 2.0 inches, with a thickness of at least 3mm.

IV. How Are Pins Measured?
One final thing to remember: factories price pins based on their longest dimension.
If you are designing a magic sword that is 2 inches tall but only 0.5 inches wide, it is priced as a 2-inch pin. We take your artwork, draw an imaginary box around its widest points, and the longest side of that box is your official size!

V. Don't Forget the "Two-Post" Rule!
You've picked the perfect size, but there is one mechanical detail you cannot ignore: the pin posts (the needles on the back).
If your pin is larger than 1.25 inches, it is going to be top-heavy. If you only put one single pin post in the center, gravity will take over, and your pin will constantly spin upside down when worn on a jacket or backpack.
The Golden Rule: Always request TWO pin posts (with rubber or butterfly clutches) for any design 1.25" or larger. This locks the pin in place and ensures your artwork stays perfectly straight all day long.
