"What size should my pin be?"

It is the most common question we get at HappyPins. When you are looking at a giant digital illustration on your monitor, it is incredibly hard to visualize how that artwork will translate into a physical piece of metal in the palm of your hand.

II. The Golden Rule: Complex Details Need Bigger Pins

Here is the most important secret of pin manufacturing: Metal lines need physical space.

Every time colors change in your design, there must be a raised metal line separating those colors (otherwise, the liquid enamel paint will mix together). In the factory, these metal borders must be at least 0.2mm thick to survive the stamping process, and the colored areas need to be at least 0.3mm wide to hold paint.

What does this mean for your size? If you have a highly detailed character with complex eyes, hair strands, and jewelry, you cannot shrink it down to 1 inch. If you do, the factory will have to simplify the design, stripping away your hard work, or the metal lines will crash into each other and create a messy blob.

• Simple Logos / Bold Text: Can easily be shrunk down to 0.75" or 1.00".

• Characters / Intricate Art: Needs to be at least 1.50" or larger to breathe.

The standard size for a premium medal or coin is usually 1.75 or 2.0 inches, with a thickness of at least 3mm.

IV. How Are Pins Measured?

One final thing to remember: factories price pins based on their longest dimension.

If you are designing a magic sword that is 2 inches tall but only 0.5 inches wide, it is priced as a 2-inch pin. We take your artwork, draw an imaginary box around its widest points, and the longest side of that box is your official size!

V. Don't Forget the "Two-Post" Rule!

You've picked the perfect size, but there is one mechanical detail you cannot ignore: the pin posts (the needles on the back).

If your pin is larger than 1.25 inches, it is going to be top-heavy. If you only put one single pin post in the center, gravity will take over, and your pin will constantly spin upside down when worn on a jacket or backpack.

The Golden Rule: Always request TWO pin posts (with rubber or butterfly clutches) for any design 1.25" or larger. This locks the pin in place and ensures your artwork stays perfectly straight all day long.
